Car Body Identification in Automobile Production

End-to-end use of RFID for automobile identification

Digital production and logistics in the automotive industry require information about each individual vehicle at all times: identification number, current production area, body shape, paintwork, engine or equipment must be automated and reliably recordable. The greatest challenge here is posed by autonomously operating trades, as they generally use different identification technologies, which severely restricts the networking possibilities of the production areas. In some cases, vehicle information is still recorded on paper. There is therefore no centralized recording of vehicle information, making consistent vehicle identification across all trades virtually impossible. In addition, the various identification technologies have to be maintained, which causes additional expense.

Your Benefits

  • Cross-system identification with just a single tag
  • Maximum detection rate thanks to polarization switching
  • Minimum installation effort thanks to Power over Ethernet (PoE) and integrated I/Os

  • The polarization switching of the Q150 guarantees maximum detection rates in metal environments

  • The TW865-868-Q30L50-M-HT-B332 hard tag contains the process and component data of the entire production

  • The TW860-960-L75-50-M-HT-B42 high temperature label accompanies the vehicle right up to shipment

Cross-trade identification with a single data carrier

Right from the first production step in the body shop, each vehicle is fitted with a particularly resistant RFID data carrier that is suitable for mounting directly on metal. The durable PCB-based hard tag is mounted on the right rear of the body and accompanies the vehicle from the first production step through the paint shop to assembly, picking and delivery. The high-temperature data carrier has an extended EPC memory of 56 bytes for tracking long serial numbers (such as the VIN) and an extensive freely usable memory of 256 bytes to chronologically record the production process and components up to final assembly.

Standardized data for intelligent production

The Hard Tag enables end-to-end digitalized production and logistics. The data from all trades is logged centrally on the vehicle. Only one identification technology is required and only this needs to be maintained. Each trade can read information from the RFID transponder chip, but also store new data on it. In this way, standardized vehicle information on the data carrier ensures cross-trade identification of the vehicle.

Maximum capture rate of tags

A Q150 RFID UHF reader near the respective workstation ensures the maximum detection rate of the tags. Its polarization switching ensures that tags are detected on several polarization levels and thus ensures reliable detection of the tags in any position. The Q150-EN UHF reader can be used in the three Ethernet networks Profinet Ethernet/IP or Modbus TCP immediately and without user intervention, while the Q150-EC can be integrated via the EtherCat interface. This is a great advantage for international manufacturers with control systems from different networks. The Q150-EN version even eliminates the need for a separate power supply thanks to Power over Ethernet. The Q150 RFID reader can be connected directly to controllers or other systems via Ethernet. Users do not need an additional interface. This means there is very little intervention in the existing application. With its flexibility, the Q150 increases the investment security of the UHF application.
